Taxpayers and tax professionals should remain alert and aware of these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/tax-scams\/recognize-tax-scams-and-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">common scams<\/a>\u00a0to avoid losing money, personal information, or client data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/dirty-dozen-taking-tax-advice-on-social-media-can-be-bad-news-for-taxpayers-inaccurate-or-misleading-tax-information-circulating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Social media: Fraudulent form filing and bad advice<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media can circulate inaccurate or misleading tax information. The IRS has recently seen schemes that encourage people to submit false, inaccurate information in hopes of getting a refund or taking advantage of a credit, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/employee-retention-ways-to-mitigate-staff-attrition\/\">Employee Retention Credit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-law-and-news\/home-energy-credits-under-the-inflation-reduction-act\/\">Fuel Tax Credit<\/a>. Taxpayers should always remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-warns-taxpayers-about-misleading-claims-about-non-existent-self-employment-tax-credit-promoters-social-media-peddling-inaccurate-eligibility-suggestions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bogus self-employment tax credit<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media advice continues to circulate about a\u00a0non-existent \u201cSelf-Employment Tax Credit\u201d\u00a0that is misleading taxpayers into filing false claims. Promoters market it as a way for self-employed people and <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/setting-up-an-advisory-gig-in-the-gig-economy\/\">gig workers<\/a> to get payments of up to $32,000 for the pandemic period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, the underlying credit being referred to in social media is not called the \u201cSelf-Employment Tax Credit;&#8221; it\u2019s a much more limited and technical credit called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-credits-for-paid-leave-under-the-american-rescue-plan-act-of-2021-specific-provisions-related-to-self-employed-individuals\" target=\"_blank\">Credits for Sick Leave and Family Leave<\/a>. Many people simply do not qualify for these credits; the IRS is closely reviewing claims coming in under this provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/dirty-dozen-irs-warns-taxpayers-to-stay-away-from-helpful-scammers-offering-to-set-up-an-online-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Online Account help from third-party scammers<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers pose as a &#8220;helpful&#8221; third party and offer to help create a taxpayer&#8217;s IRS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/online-account-for-individuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Online Account<\/a>\u00a0at IRS.gov, but their real goal is to steal personal information. Instead, taxpayers should access their account directly through IRS.gov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/how-to-know-its-the-irs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Phishing and spearphishing<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxpayers and tax professionals should be alert to fake communications posing as legitimate organizations in the tax and financial community, including the IRS and the states. These messages arrive in the form of an unsolicited text or email to lure victims into providing valuable personal and financial information that can lead to identity theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spearphishing is a tailored <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/make-your-office-a-no-phishing-zone\/\">phishing<\/a> attempt targeting a specific individual or group. Tax professionals need to be very careful about spearphishing because of the risk of a <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/act-fast-after-discovering-a-data-breach\/\">data breach<\/a>. A successful spearphishing attack can ultimately steal client data and the tax preparer&#8217;s identity, allowing the thief to file fraudulent returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-warns-of-mills-taking-advantage-of-taxpayers-with-offer-in-compromise-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Offer in compromise mills<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offers in compromise are an important program to help people who can&#8217;t pay to settle their federal tax debts. But &#8220;offer in compromise mills&#8221; can aggressively promote offers in compromise in misleading ways to people who clearly don&#8217;t meet the qualifications, often costing taxpayers thousands of dollars.
