This scam peaks during the busy tax filing season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>How the new client scam works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scammer emails a tax professional to ask for help with their taxes. This <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/simple-5-point-checklist-to-recognize-and-fight-phishing-attacks\/\">phishing email<\/a> has a malicious link or attachment that the scammer claims is their tax information. When the tax professional clicks the link or opens the attachment, the scammer gets access to the preparer&#8217;s email address, password, and possibly other information. Some scammers may also load malware onto the tax pro&#8217;s computer to gain access to their system\u2014and their clients\u2019 data. Scammers may also use the tax professional\u2019s hacked email account to target clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>Where to report phishing emails and other scams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People should report unsolicited email that claims to be from the IRS to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:phishing@irs.gov\">phishing@irs.gov<\/a>. For those experiencing any money loss due to an IRS-related scam incident, report it to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tigta.gov\/hotline?type=IRSScamsandFraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Trade Commission<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Internet Crime Complaint Center<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People can also forward the email to their internet service provider&#8217;s abuse department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>Data breaches: What to do if a tax professional is victimized<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If reported quickly, the IRS can block fraudulent returns in clients&#8217; names and take other steps to protect the tax professional and their clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For tax professionals who are victims, the IRS recommends immediately reporting data theft to the local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/stakeholder-liaison-local-contacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRS Stakeholder Liaison<\/a>\u00a0representative. Liaisons notify IRS Criminal Investigation and others within the agency on the tax professional&#8217;s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax professionals should also report fraud incidents to the local offices of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\" target=\"_blank\">FBI<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.secretservice.gov\/contact\/field-offices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Secret Service<\/a>\u00a0and to their local police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To report data breaches to the state in which they prepare state returns, tax professionals can contact these organizations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/taxadmin.org\/report-a-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federation of Tax Administrators<\/a>: Tax professionals can use this special &#8220;report a data breach&#8221; web page to get state guidance on reporting scam victims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naag.org\/find-my-ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">State attorneys general<\/a>: Most states require that the state attorney general receive notification of data breaches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-x-large-font-size\"><strong>Create a written information security plan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key component to responding to a data breach is to have an effective action plan and know who to contact. Under FCC rules, tax professionals must have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/elements-in-your-written-info-security-plan-wisp\/\">Written Information Security Plan<\/a>.
