{"id":24798,"date":"2022-01-10T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T14:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/?p=24798"},"modified":"2023-08-22T11:08:10","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T16:08:10","slug":"packaging-irs-resolution-services-as-part-of-your-advisory-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/advisory-services\/packaging-irs-resolution-services-as-part-of-your-advisory-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Packaging IRS Resolution Services as part of your advisory practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you determine the services you\u2019ll offer to clients?<\/p>\n<p>When I initially started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asegroupoffices.com\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ASE Group<\/a> in 2016, I began by offering the services I knew best: bookkeeping and tax prep. Was there demand for it? Sure, but was something missing? Absolutely. About two years and $20,000 of wasted marketing dollars later, I started listening more actively to what clients were saying \u2013 and weren\u2019t saying \u2013 during consultation calls.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Their previous accountant made them feel like a number. When they received a tax notice, they were left to figure out how to resolve it on their own, or needed someone to tell them what they didn\u2019t know before it became a problem. Clients wanted to know someone was thinking of the things they had no clue about.<\/p>\n<p>When I started listening to what clients wanted, I realized I needed to build my service offerings to best suit the needs of the clients I wanted to work with. What they were lacking from their previous bookkeeper, tax preparer, or tax resolution specialist was <a href=\"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/tag\/advisory-services\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">advisory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At ASE Group, we\u2019ve learned that the secrets to sustainability are standardization, the power to pivot, and adding advisory to your service offerings. Advisory felt like the buzzword of 2020 and 2021 (second to <a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/coronavirus\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>), but it\u2019s true. Firms of the future aren\u2019t just preparing tax returns or bookkeeping (a robot could do that \u2026 and they are!). If you\u2019re looking to build a firm that\u2019ll have staying power, advisory is the path because clients need support that\u2019s more proactive than reactive.<\/p>\n<p>Advisory services can mean a lot of things to firms and clients, but in its simplest form, we define advisory as the support clients need outside of compliance to address the things they aren&#8217;t even aware of. This includes helping clients navigate <a href=\"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/category\/tax-law-and-news\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">tax law changes<\/a> and understanding how the law impacts them, planning for, and minimizing, tax liabilities, and answering the tough questions. Advisory equates to peace of mind for clients, and believe it or not, they\u2019re willing to <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/practice-management\/getting-started-with-subscription-pricing\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">pay<\/a> for it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Resolution clients are seeking advice and guidance to solve their current problem, and ensure they don\u2019t find themselves in the same situation again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a firm that offers IRS Resolution services in addition to compliance and <i>traditional <\/i>advisory, I think it\u2019s important to understand how it all ties in. Tax resolution at my firm isn\u2019t solely about fixing tax problems; it\u2019s also avoiding these problems moving forward. When a client finds themselves in need of resolution, they may be feeling nervous, tired, embarrassed, or helpless. Most importantly, they\u2019re ready to not feel that way anymore \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly how we position tax resolution as part of our advisory service offerings. Resolution clients are seeking advice and guidance to solve their current problem, and ensure they don\u2019t find themselves in the same situation again.<\/p>\n<p>Our tax resolution service is a four-step process:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Discovery<\/b> \u2013 This is when we connect with the IRS and\/or the state to determine the status and amount of outstanding tax liabilities, and confirm the missing tax returns to be completed.<\/li>\n<li><b>Compliance<\/b> \u2013 In this phase, we\u2019ll complete missing tax returns (or <a href=\"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-law-and-news\/taxpayers-can-now-file-amended-returns-electronically\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener\">amend<\/a> incorrect tax returns) that are necessary to get the client back in compliance.<\/li>\n<li><b>Resolution<\/b> \u2013 Here, we\u2019ll resolve the tax liabilities in the most advantageous manner for the client. This could be an installment agreement, offer-in-compromise, penalty abatement, or any other appropriate method of resolution.<\/li>\n<li><b>Peace of Mind<\/b> \u2013 It\u2019s in this phase that we help the client minimize the likelihood that they\u2019ll need tax resolution again. Our goal is to have a client only need tax resolution once, and advisory forever. We achieve this through monitoring the implemented resolution and taking on an active role in helping the client manage future tax liabilities and tax filings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Each of these phases start with advisory, from obtaining transcripts to facilitating tax return preparation, creating the resolution roadmap, and restoring the client\u2019s peace of mind \u2013 quite \u00a0possibly the most important phase \u2013 through subscription-based advisory. By the time we get to this phase, clients will gladly invest in an ongoing relationship because they see the value of having timely advice and support from a trusted professional.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of what you may call resolution services in your practice, if you\u2019re offering or considering offering these services, surprise! You\u2019re doing advisory! You\u2019re filling in the gaps, providing valuable solutions to client challenges, and creating a roadmap to avoid similar issues in the future.
