{"id":23665,"date":"2021-08-25T08:00:29","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/?p=23665"},"modified":"2024-01-16T09:45:30","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T15:45:30","slug":"preparing-your-accounting-firm-for-the-great-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/practice-management\/preparing-your-accounting-firm-for-the-great-resignation\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparing your accounting firm for the great resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 4 million employees in the United States quit their jobs in July, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2021 release<\/a> from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This trend of widespread job exits was dubbed \u201cThe Great Resignation\u201d in May 2021 by Anthony Klotz, an associate professor of management at Texas A&amp;M University. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-10\/quit-your-job-how-to-resign-after-covid-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg interview<\/a>, Klotz warned that, \u201cthe many pandemic-related epiphanies\u2014about family time, remote work, commuting, passion projects, life and death \u2026 [are making] people turn their back on the 9-to-5 office grind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While many are skeptical of such an exaggerative term, the data certainly supports Klotz\u2019s foreboding. Following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>, many employees are resigning from their jobs and pursuing alternative options for their careers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/learnmore.monster.com\/job-index-in-the-time-of-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monster Job Index<\/a> shows that 95% of employees are thinking about changing their jobs in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>As we all adjust to a post-COVID world, I believe there are many proactive measures that we can take in our firms to attract and retain high-quality staff, even as many businesses grapple with an influx of resignation letters from their employees.<\/p>\n<h2>Provide hybrid or remote work options<\/h2>\n<p>Amid all of the negative aspects of 2020, Pew Research noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2021\/03\/05\/in-their-own-words-americans-describe-the-struggles-and-silver-linings-of-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">33% of Americans<\/a> appreciated being able to spend more time with their spouse, children, and other family members. As pandemic restrictions ease up in many areas throughout the United States, many employees are taking action on a renewed perspective regarding their work, their relationships, and the balance between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Having experienced the flexibility of remote work during the pandemic, many employees are demanding it become part of their company\u2019s \u201cnew normal.\u201d Companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/6\/2\/22465846\/apple-employees-return-office-three-days-week-september?scrolla=5eb6d68b7fedc32c19ef33b4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and Twitter have introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2020\/05\/13\/twitter-ceo-jack-dorsey-tells-employees-they-can-work-from-home-forever-before-you-celebrate-theres-a-catch\/?sh=2ef5289e2e91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hybrid work schedules<\/a>, while Spotify is implementing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2021\/02\/12\/spotify-will-let-employees-work-from-anywhere-they-do-their-best-thinking-and-creating\/?sh=1a448fc8e046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cremote-forever\u201d policy<\/a>. In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/mbsaccountancy.com\/blog\/switching-to-remote-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">my firm switched to a hybrid work model<\/a>, which offered us more flexibility and an improved work-life balance for my team and me. I\u2019d recommend asking your staff whether they\u2019d prefer a hybrid, remote, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/making-flextime-work-for-your-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flextime schedule<\/a>. Then, as you move to a remote or hybrid work model, make sure you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use Slack or similar apps for urgent communications and emails for non-urgent ones.<\/li>\n<li>Share knowledge using a set of standard operating procedures or company wiki.<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to <a href=\"https:\/\/mbsaccountancy.com\/10-years-7-valuable-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hire for fit and train for skills<\/a>. Good character often supersedes skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Empower your employees with skills<\/h2>\n<p>More than ever, employees are pursuing the \u201cBe Your Own Boss\u201d concept, and starting their own businesses or becoming freelancers. This is hardly surprising, given the abundance of innovative technology available today. Further, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/what-do-millennials-want-a-look-at-deloittes-latest-millennial-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2019 Deloitte survey<\/a> found that millennials and generation Z members are driven by a strong desire to have a flexible schedule and impact their world in a meaningful way. If companies are not providing employees with a sense of purpose or impact on the world, there is a big possibility that they will turn to greener pastures.<\/p>\n<p>Part of providing employees with purpose involves upskilling, a term referring to the continual development of one\u2019s skills and abilities, particularly within the labor market. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/upskilling\/hopes-and-fears.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PwC\u2019s 2021 Hopes &amp; Fears survey<\/a>, 77% of PwC&#8217;s employees stated they want to acquire new skills. Whether you\u2019re looking to fill new positions or simply avoid losing employees to better opportunities, it\u2019s critical that you provide growth opportunities for your staff. As we enter into an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/future-of-work\/jobs-lost-jobs-gained-what-the-future-of-work-will-mean-for-jobs-skills-and-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">era of increased automation<\/a>, your staff will appreciate learning new skills that help them adapt and succeed. Remember, staff development isn\u2019t an expense: it\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/theres-no-i-in-team-investing-in-your-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment<\/a> in your firm\u2019s capabilities and long-term growth.<\/p>\n<h2>Align staff roles with your firm\u2019s vision<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/321965\/employee-engagement-reverts-back-pre-covid-levels.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2020 Gallup report<\/a> revealed that 51% of employees are disengaged in the workplace. It can be easy to view employee engagement as a hyped-up buzzword, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conference-board.org\/topics\/dna-of-engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> shows that companies can lose between $450-$550 billion a year because of employee disengagement. One of the first signs that a staff member is considering a fast job exit is a lack of interest and engagement. Part of remedying a lack of engagement in your staff is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/planning-for-growth-in-your-firm-make-it-personal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">align their professional goals<\/a> with your firm\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/long-term-growth-strategy-proves-positive-for-accounting-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growth vision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aligning your staff\u2019s personal expectations with your vision for your firm sounds intimidating, but it can be quite simple in practice. For example, in 1-on-1 reviews with employees, ask about their \u201cbig picture\u201d for their life, preferred management style, and workplace expectations. Understanding their answers to these questions will provide you with valuable insights that can transform your firm into a workplace they\u2019ll never want to leave. It\u2019s also important to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firmofthefuture.com\/content\/transparent-truth-transforms-your-firms-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> create a sense of safety<\/a> within your firm by being truthful and transparent with your staff.<\/p>\n<h2>Growing requires humane leadership<\/h2>\n<p>The pace of disruption and innovation in our world was accelerated by the pandemic, and it\u2019s vital that accounting professionals and leaders adjust accordingly. As our ideas about work and the workplace continue to be challenged and changed, leading our employees with compassion and humanity will prove more important than ever before.
