{"id":18917,"date":"2020-03-18T08:00:59","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T13:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/taxprocenter.proconnect.intuit.com\/?p=18917"},"modified":"2021-10-20T12:10:38","modified_gmt":"2021-10-20T17:10:38","slug":"pay-by-refund-an-alternate-way-to-get-paid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/proconnect\/pay-by-refund-an-alternate-way-to-get-paid\/","title":{"rendered":"Pay-by-Refund: an alternate way to get paid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, clients do not have the money to pay your fees up front, so a bank product or refund transfer such as Intuit\u00ae <a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/pay-by-refund\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_pbr\">Pay-by-Refund<\/a> (PBR) is a solution you can offer in your firm.<\/p>\n<p>Bank products allow clients to deduct your tax preparation fees directly from their refund. They are commonly used with early filers who usually expect a large refund and need the money quickly. However, times are changing; other clients may be looking for another convenient way to pay their tax invoice without accruing any upfront cost.<\/p>\n<p>When asking Intuit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-online\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_ito\">ProConnect\u2122 Tax Online<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/lacerte\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_lc\">Lacerte<\/a>\u00ae and <a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/proseries\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_ps\">ProSeries<\/a>\u00ae customers if they plan to offer PBR for tax season, I commonly hear that they do not have \u201cthese types of clients.\u201d Here is the thing: If you answer \u201cyes\u201d to any of questions below, you have at least one client who can benefit from PBR.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you or someone in your firm call clients who are past due on their invoices to remind them to pay?<\/li>\n<li>Do you find yourself wanting to offer more services?<\/li>\n<li>Do you make payment arrangements with clients?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have any clients who would rather keep their money in their pocket?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Did you raise your hand or shake your head? If so, let\u2019s talk about the clients who are looking for a different tax preparation payment experience:<\/p>\n<p><b>The forgetter:<\/b> These are the ones who forget to pay their invoice. After you complete and e-file their return, they don\u2019t pay you until you spend hours trying to reach them. This leads to sending countless invoices, voicemails, and waiting weeks or months to get paid, all while racking up non-billable hours.<\/p>\n<p><b>The convenience seekers:<\/b> Some clients just like to get things done and not worry about it later, often seeing the invoice and paying by credit card right away. As the tax preparer, you may have to pay a small credit card processing fee, but you do get paid! However, for your clients, carrying credit card balances is expensive and can hurt credit ratings. Taxpayers who pay by PBR instead of credit cards can avoid running up their credit card balances.<\/p>\n<p><b>The entrepreneur:<\/b> Cash is king when it comes to the financial management of a growing company, and one of the reasons why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.preferredcfo.com\/cash-flow-reason-small-businesses-fail\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_preferredCFO-cashflowfail\" target=\"_blank\">82 percent of small businesses fail<\/a>. These client will relate to the value in PBR because it will allow them to keep their money in their pocket so they can focus on paying suppliers and employees.<\/p>\n<p><b>The loyalists:<\/b> This group loves you and most likely relies on you for additional work outside tax preparation, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/proconnect.intuit.com\/tax-practice-of-the-future\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_tpotf\">advisory services<\/a>. To them, your services are unlike any other, and they keep coming back to you again and again, so providing added value is key. With an established newsletter, you can take advantage of your established client base and reputation, which is cost effective and helps you target your audience. Keep in mind that you can offer the option to clients you place on <a href=\"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/client-relationships\/how-to-advise-clients-regarding-extension-filing\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_tpc-adviseregardingextensionfiling\">extension<\/a>, as long as they are receiving a refund.<\/p>\n<p>4: <b>Bundle PBR:<\/b> During the review process, try offering PBR as a <a href=\"https:\/\/accountants.intuit.com\/taxprocenter\/client-relationships\/infographic-imagine-the-possibilities-with-bundled-services\/\"title=\"\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\" data-wa-link=\"body_tpc-possibilitiesbundledservices\">bundled<\/a> billing solution and speak to the value. For example, let\u2019s say you have a client who could benefit from a tax planning package, but may not have the money to purchase the service up front. You could inform the client that with the PBR program, they not only pay their invoice with their refund, but also pay for your additional services. It\u2019s a win-win!<\/p>\n<p>By now, I hope PBR makes more sense for you and your firm.
