Here are the top 10 tax facts about exemptions to help you file your tax return:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>E-file your tax return.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Filing electronically is the easiest way to file a complete and accurate tax return. The software that you use to e-file will help you determine the number of exemptions that you can claim. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Filing\/E-File-Options\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-efileOpt\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">E-file options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> include free <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Individuals\/Free-Tax-Return-Preparation-for-You-by-Volunteers\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-freeTaxRt\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Volunteer Assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/Free-File:-Do-Your-Federal-Taxes-for-Free\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-returnsfree\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">IRS Free File<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/efile-with-Commercial-Software\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-software\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">commercial software<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/Authorized-IRS-e-file-Providers-for-Individuals\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-authEfile\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">professional assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Exemptions cut income.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> There are two types of exemptions. The first type is a personal exemption. The second type is an exemption for a dependent. You can usually deduct $3,950 for each exemption you claim on your 2014 tax return.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Personal exemptions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> You can usually claim an exemption for yourself. If you\u2019ve married and file a joint return, you can claim one for your spouse, too. If you file a separate return, you can claim an exemption for your spouse only if your spouse had no gross income, is not filing a tax return and was not the dependent of another taxpayer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Exemptions for dependents.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> You can usually claim an exemption for each of your dependents. A dependent is either your child or a relative who meets a set of tests. You can\u2019t claim your spouse as a dependent. You must list the Social Security number of each dependent you claim on your tax return. For more on these rules, see IRS Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction and Filing Information. You can get Publication 501 on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">IRS.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Just click on the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Forms-&amp;-Pubs\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-formsPubs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Forms &amp; Pubs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201d tab on the home page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Report health care coverage.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The health care law requires you to report certain health insurance information for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Affordable-Care-Act\/Individuals-and-Families\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-aca\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">you and your family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Affordable-Care-Act\/Individuals-and-Families\/Individual-Shared-Responsibility-Provision\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">individual shared responsibility provision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> requires you and each member of your family to either: have qualifying health insurance, called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Affordable-Care-Act\/Individuals-and-Families\/ACA-Individual-Shared-Responsibility-Provision-Minimum-Essential-Coverage\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-minCov\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">minimum essential coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, have an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p5172.pdf\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-p5172\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">exemption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> from this coverage requirement or make a shared responsibility <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p5185.pdf\" data-wa-link=\"body_irs-p5185\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">payment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> when you file your 2014 tax return. There are some exceptions to this rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Dependents may have to file. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">A person who can claim as your dependent may have to file their own tax return. This depends on certain factors, such as the amount of their income, whether they are married and if they owe certain taxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>No exemption on dependent\u2019s return.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> If you can claim a person as a dependent, that person can\u2019t claim a personal exemption on his or her own tax return. This is true even if you don\u2019t actually claim that person on your tax return. This rule applies because you can claim that person is your dependent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><b>Exemption phase-out.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The $3,950 per exemption is subject to income limits. This rule may reduce or eliminate the amount you can claim based on the amount of your income.
