March 2026 tax and compliance deadlines

Now that tax season is in full swing and the IRS announced the first day for e-filing, you’re no doubt heads down and working more hours. Along the way, don’t forget about these important deadlines, and be sure to share this list with your clients.

In March, it is recommended that you:

  • Finalize and file S corporation and partnership returns: Ensure returns are completed or extension requests are properly submitted. 
  • Distribute Schedule K-1s promptly: Provide shareholders and partners with K-1 s to prevent compliance delays later in the season.
  • Educate small business clients on the One, Big Beautiful Bill: Highlight expanded OBI thresholds, home office deduction options, and payroll training credits. 
  • Reconcile and transmit information returns: Verify accuracy of 1099 and 1098 electronic filings and ensure transmission by March 31.
  • Identify depreciation opportunities: Create a list of startup and bonus depreciation strategies for clients planning business expansion or asset purchases in 2026.

Key Compliance Dates

Monday, March 2:

  • File paper Forms 1099, 1098, 5498, and W-2G with the IRS for 2025, accompanied by Form 1096. 
  • File paper Form 8027, Employer’s Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips, for calendar year 2025 to report tip income and allocated tips for large food or beverage establishments. 
  • File paper Form 8809, Application for Extension of Time To File Information Returns, to request an extension for Forms W-2 and 1099 if not filed electronically. 

Wednesday, March 11: Employees who received $20 or more in tips during February must report them to their employer (Form 4070). 

Monday, March 16: 

  • Calendar-year S corporations and partnerships must file their 2025 tax returns (Forms 1120-S and 1065) or request an extension.
  • Deadline to provide Schedule K-1 s to shareholders and partners of calendar-year entities. 
  • Employers applying the monthly deposit rule must deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax on payments made in February. 

Monday, March 30: Deposit excise taxes for forms due on March 31. 

Tuesday, March 31: Electronically file Forms 1099, 1098, 5498, and W-2G for 2025 with the IRS.
