Welcome to another profile in a series of articles about members of the Intuit® Tax Council. Meet Katie Helle, founder of Scaled Accounting Solutions in Chandler, Arizona. I sat down with Katie to learn more about her firm, a bit about her background, and the Intuit Tax Council.

Scott Cytron: Tell our readers about your practice.

Katie Helle: Scaled Accounting Solutions is a boutique firm that blends high-level tax strategy with modern, tech-forward bookkeeping and accounting support. We work primarily with small businesses and high-net-worth individuals who want more than traditional compliance; they want a partner who helps them stay proactive, organized, and tax-efficient year-round.

Our focus is on creating a client experience that feels streamlined and intentional. We leverage smart systems and automation so business owners can spend less time buried in financial tasks and more time actually running (and enjoying) their business. At the same time, I’ve built the firm to support the lifestyle I value—flexibility, family time, and meaningful work with clients I genuinely enjoy serving.

At its core, Scaled Accounting is about clarity, strategy, and making the financial side of business feel doable instead of daunting.

SC: So tell me what is unique about Scaled Accounting Solutions compared to other firms. Does the firm niche in any specific areas?

KH: What sets Scaled Accounting Solutions apart is the combination of deep tax expertise, intentional client experience design, and a tech-forward approach to running a modern firm. I built the practice around proactive tax strategy rather than reactive tax prep, so clients aren’t just filing returns; they’re making informed, year-round decisions that actually move their business forward.

We also keep our client list intentionally selective. That allows us to offer a higher level of partnership, faster communication, and support that feels personalized; because it is.

While we aren’t a niche-specific firm, most of our work naturally centers around two groups: small business owners and high-net-worth individuals who value proactive tax planning and streamlined financial systems.

SC: What kinds of Intuit products are you using in your tech stack?

KH: We use Intuit ProConnect™ Tax, Intuit Tax Advisor, and QuickBooks® Online.

SC: I know you’re a new member of the Tax Council. In what ways do you think the Council is important to the profession?

KH: The Tax Council plays a crucial role in shaping the tools and technology our profession relies on. Tax professionals are the ones in the trenches; we see where workflows break down, where guidance is needed, and where smarter automation could make a real difference. Having our voices directly involved in product development ensures that the solutions Intuit builds actually reflect the realities of modern tax practice.

User input isn’t just helpful; it’s essential. When practitioners and product teams collaborate, we end up with tools that are more intuitive, more accurate, and more aligned with how firms operate day-to-day. Being part of the Council is an opportunity to make sure the needs of both professionals and taxpayers are understood and represented.

SC: What was your very first job?

KH: I’ve been working in some capacity since I was young. My earliest “jobs” were babysitting gigs back in middle school. But my first real job was at 13, working at a small, family-owned bakery called Something Sweet, just a bike ride away on the other side of our neighborhood. I was the kid who did a little bit of everything: running the register, washing dishes, cleaning, and jumping in wherever I was needed. Over time, they taught me how to bake, and even decorate cakes and pastries. It was hands-on, fast-paced, and packed with lessons about hard work, customer service, and rolling up your sleeves; all skills that shaped the professional I am today.

SC: How can tax professionals keep up with all the changes in tax laws and regulations?

KH: Tax laws and regulations change with this year being a big one with the OBBBA, so staying up to date has to be intentional. For me, webinars and podcasts are two of the most effective ways to keep pace with what’s new and what’s coming. One of my favorite resources is Earmark. It’s an easy way to earn CPE while listening to high-quality podcasts that break down real-world tax issues and updates.

I’m also a big believer in the power of community. When like-minded professionals come together—whether in formal groups, online forums, or mastermind-style communities—it creates space for discussion, problem-solving, and learning from each other’s experiences. Staying connected keeps you current, supported, and sharp.

SC: If you were stranded on a desert island with access to just one kind of technology, what would it be, and why would you want it?

KH: If I could only have one piece of technology, I’d pick a smartphone. Staying connected is second nature for me, and one of the perks of running a cloud-based virtual firm is being able to work from anywhere—even a desert island, in theory. A smartphone keeps me close to my family (my number one priority) and also gives me access to everything I need for work: my systems, my clients, and all the tools I rely on every day. I just hope I’m not stranded out there until someone finally invents a solar-powered version!
