Intuit® Tax Council Profile: Ami Shah

Read the Article

Welcome to another profile in a series of articles about members of the Intuit® Tax Council. Meet Ami Shah, founder of Ami Shah CPA in San Jose, California. I sat down with Ami to learn more about her firm, a bit about her background, and even what she did in her first job.

Scott Cytron: Tell our readers about your practice.

Ami Shah: Our practice is built on a single, unwavering promise: uncompromising integrity meets strategic results. We offer the technical firepower of a large firm with the accountability of a dedicated partner. We don’t just view accounting as data entry; we view it as the architecture of our clients’ financial lives. Our clients return year after year, not just because we are friendly, but because we deliver consistent, accurate results that withstand scrutiny. They know their financial future is in steady, capable hands.

While we began with general compliance, we have evolved into a results-oriented strategic partner. We operate under a “best of both worlds” philosophy:

  • Foundational integrity: We adhere to the highest traditional standards of accuracy and ethics. We believe in getting it right the first time, every time.
  • Modern execution: We leverage data to drive outcomes. We don’t just record history; we use modern tools to forecast and shape the financial future for businesses operating in today’s digital-first economy.

SC: What is unique about your firm compared to other firms?

AS: What distinguishes us is our focus on ROI for our clients. We combine technical expertise with cloud-based efficiency to transform accounting from a stressful obligation into a wealth-building asset.

SC: Does the firm have a niche in any specific areas?

AS: We specialize in high-net-worth W-2 earners, entrepreneurs, and growing businesses. Rather than just filing forms, we actively model scenarios to legally minimize tax liability and maximize cash flow. Our clients don’t just get a tax return; they get a roadmap. By prioritizing transparency and proactive planning, we ensure our clients keep more of what they work hard to earn, all while maintaining absolute compliance.

SC: What is your firm’s tech stack, and what Intuit products are you using?

AS: Our tech stack is designed for precision, security, and speed.  Our firm uses Canopy to ensure sensitive data is protected by bank-level security. We use Intuit products because it allows us to deliver accurate results in real time: QuickBooks® for financial management and Intuit Lacerte® Tax.

Critically, by integrating these with Intuit Tax Planner, we shift from reactive to proactive. We don’t just file your past; we model your future. This allows us to run sophisticated “what-if'” scenarios to help clients make data-backed decisions before year-end. This integration gives us the agility to support clients anywhere, with the enterprise-level security their data demands.

SC: I know you’re a new member of the Tax Council. In what ways do you think the Council important to the profession?

AS: The Tax Council is essential for maintaining the integrity and relevance of our profession. In an era of digital assets, e-commerce, and shifting regulations, the Council serves as a critical think tank that bridges the gap between legislation and practical application.

For me, serving on the Council is about professional stewardship. It’s about ensuring that we aren’t just reacting to new laws, but actively shaping a tax environment that is efficient, fair, and predictable. It allows us to advocate for standards that protect both the practitioner and the public.

SC: What was your very first job?

AS:  I worked as a tax preparer at a CPA firm. While it was worlds away from the complex strategy I handle now, it was my first masterclass in responsibility. I learned early on that behind every number is a family’s livelihood or a business owner’s dream. That job taught me that being a professional isn’t just about technical skill; it’s about the integrity to treat every client’s money with the same care and respect as if it were my own.

SC: How can tax professionals keep up with all the changes in tax laws and regulations?

AS: You cannot rely on yesterday’s knowledge to solve today’s problems. Result-oriented professionals must be relentless students. We stay ahead by aggressively pursuing continuing education, dissecting IRS updates, and leveraging advanced research tools. It is not enough to just read the law; we collaborate with peers and professional organizations to understand the practical application of those laws to ensure our clients are always compliant and optimized.

SC: If you were stranded on a desert island with access to just one kind of technology, what would it be, and why would you want it?

AS: I’d have to say a Kindle pre-loaded with every tax code, regulation, and economic case study ever written—and a solar charger. People think that sounds like a nightmare, but as a CPA, I’m wired to solve complex problems with limited resources. By the time I was rescued, I wouldn’t just be surviving; I’d have established a structured island economy and found a way to make the coconut trade tax-exempt for the first five years!

SC: Thanks Ami!
