How to resolve Diagnostic 15057 in Lacerte

by Intuit• Updated 5 months ago

If you're receiving the following diagnostic:

Diagnostic 15057:

Per the e-File Business Rules, the Payment Amount on the IRS Payment Record must not be more than 200% of the amount on Form 1040, Amount you owe.

________________________________________________________________________

This diagnostic is triggered when the scheduled electronic payment in Lacerte exceeds 200% of the balance due as calculated on Form 1040, Line 37. The IRS rejects e-filed returns that request payments beyond this threshold, as it typically indicates a data entry error.

For example, if the balance due is $1,000, the maximum amount you can schedule for direct debit is $2,000. Entering $2,500 would trigger this diagnostic and prevent electronic filing.

Additionally, this issue is commonly caused when penalties and interest are added manually in Lacerte - causing the total payment amount to exceed the IRS’s accepted limit. While the software includes those amounts to help calculate the taxpayer’s total remittance, the IRS doesn’t allow them to be paid via e-file if it pushes the total over the 200% threshold.

Follow these steps to resolve:

Option 1 (Recommended): Remove Penalties and Interest to E-File

If you've manually entered penalties and interest in Screen 8, follow these steps to keep the return eligible for e-filing:

  1. Print supporting documentation:
    • Go to View > Forms and print the Penalties and Interest Worksheet and Statement
    • Also print the Client Letter, which will show the correct total remittance amount for the taxpayer to send
  2. Go to Screen 8 – Penalties & Interest
  3. Scroll to the section labeled:
    Late Return Penalty & Interest
  4. Delete any entries in that section (leave fields blank)
  5. Recalculate the return (Ctrl + R) to confirm that Diagnostic 15057 has cleared
  6. E-file the return
  7. Instruct the taxpayer to remit the full intended payment (including penalties and interest) by either:
    • Mailing a check with the 1040-V voucher, or

This method allows you to e-file the return without violating IRS limits, while still collecting the proper total payment amount.

Option 2: Reduce the Scheduled IRS Payment Amount

If you’re not using Screen 8 for penalties and the taxpayer simply wants to pay more than their actual balance due:

  1. Go to Screen 3 – Miscellaneous Information
  2. Scroll to the section titled Direct Deposit of Refund / Electronic Payment
  3. Locate the checkbox: Electronic payment of balance due
  4. If selected, Lacerte will schedule a payment equal to the balance due on Form 1040 Line 37, plus any penalty/interest from Screen 8
  5. If the calculated debit amount exceeds 200% of Line 37, deselect the checkbox to disable direct debit

Either option will allow you to proceed with e-filing and ensure the taxpayer sends the full intended amount safely and within IRS limits.
