How to file Form 4720 in Lacerte

Charitable remainder trusts should e-file the 4720 in the fiduciary module of Lacerte. Attach a PDF copy of the 990-T to the filing.

To file a 4720 in the exempt module:

1. At the top of screen 1, make sure the box for Federal 4720 is checked for e-filing.
2. Go to Screen 49, Certain Excise Taxes (4720).
3. Check the box to Prepare Form 4720 with complete return.
4. Enter any applicable information.

When you’re ready to e-file:

1. Start the e-file wizard by pressing Ctrl+U on your keyboard or selecting the E-file menu, then Step 2: Start e-file return wizard…
2. Verify that US Exempt-Excise is displayed. 
3. Press Next and follow the prompts on screen to e-file the return.

To attach a PDF of 990-T:

1. Go to Screen 2.2, Electronic Filing.
2. Press the PDF Attachment button.
3. Click Attach PDF and locate the file you want to upload.
4. Check the box to Send PDF Attachment with Federal Form 4720 return.
5. In the Link to form dropdown, select Form 4720, and choose Form 990-T.

To file a 4720 in the fiduciary module:

2. Go to Screen 73, Certain Excise Taxes (4720).
3. Check the box to Prepare Form 4720.
4. Enter any applicable information.

When you’re ready to e-file:

1. Start the e-file wizard by pressing Ctrl+U on your keyboard or selecting the E-file menu, then Step 2: Start e-file return wizard…
2. Verify that US FID-EXCISE is displayed.
3. Press Next and follow the prompts on screen to e-file the return.

To generate a 4720 in the individual module:

1. At the top of screen 1, make sure the box for Federal 4720 is checked for e-filing.
2. Go to Screen 92.1, Certain Excise Taxes.
3. Check the box to Prepare Form 4720.
4. Enter any applicable information.
