How do I file an extension for a Form 990 return in Lacerte?

Form 8868 is used to apply for an automatic 6-month extension of time to file. This form is used for Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, and others.

  1. Navigate to the Extension section of the return.
  2. Complete the required inputs including:
  3. Estimated tax liability, if any.
  4. Requested payment amount, if applicable.
  5. Lacerte will generate Form 8868 and allow for electronic filing if available.

What's the difference between Form 990-EZ and 990-N, and who needs to file which?

Filing requirements are based on gross receipts and total assets:

  • Form 990-N (e-Postcard):
    • For organizations with gross receipts normally $50,000 or less.
    • Must file electronically via the IRS website (not supported directly in Lacerte).
  • Form 990-EZ:
    • For organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 and total assets less than $500,000
    • Can be prepared and e-filed in Lacerte.
  • Form 990:
    • Required for organizations above the 990-EZ thresholds.

How do I make an electronic payment when filing Form 990-PF?

To make a payment with a Form 990-PF e-filed return, use the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) method:

  1. Go to the Electronic Filing input section in Lacerte.
  2. Enter the taxpayer's bank routing and account numbers.
  3. Choose the amount and date of withdrawal.
  4. The payment will be submitted along with the e-filed return.
  5. Confirm that the return is marked for EFW payment before transmitting.
