Amending an Estate or Trust Form (1041) in Lacerte

Before you start:
- If you wish to keep the original return, please make a copy of the client file and make changes to the copied file. See How to make a copy of a client in Lacerte for details.
- You can e-file amended 1041 tax returns for tax year 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Follow these steps to amend a Form 1041 for e-file:
- Go to Screen 74, 1041 Amended Return
- Check the box, Amended return (MANDATORY)
- Enter the Tax paid with original return, if applicable.
- This amount will adjust any balance due on the Client Letter.
- Enter the Overpayment from original return, if applicable.
- This amount will adjust any balance due on the Client Letter.
- If you are amending Form 1041 due to missing Elections, check the box Filing pursuant to section 301.9100-2.
- Select Add from the left navigation panel.
- Enter the Description.
- This should be a description for the amount that changed on the amended return.
- Enter the Line number.
- This should be the line number for the amount that changed on the amended return.
- Enter the Original amount.
- Enter the Amended amount.
- Enter the explanation for the amendment in the field Explanation (Ctrl+E).
- This explanation will be included with the e-file, but will not appear in the Forms view.
- Select OK to save the explanation.
- Select Add from the left navigation panel to add additional amounts and line changes from the original return.
- Go to the various input screens to change/add the amounts from the original return
- Go to Screen 12, Estimates (1041-ES).
- Scroll down to the Additional Estimated Tax Payments Amount Paid subsection.
- Enter the Amount paid, if applicable.
- See the 1041 form instructions below for more information.
- You can use Crtl+E to open the Supporting Detail window. Click on the radial button for Statement. Any text description entered will flow with the amount to the return as supporting detail.
Per the 1041 instructions:
If the total tax on line 23 is larger on the amended return than on the original return, you generally should pay the difference with the amended return. However, you should adjust this amount if there is any increase or decrease in the total payments shown on line 25.
Attach a sheet that explains the reason for the amendments and identifies the lines and amounts being changed on the amended return.
