How to deduct state and local sales tax in Lacerte
by Intuit•10• Updated 3 weeks ago
Taxpayers have the option of deducting state and local sales taxes, instead of state and local income taxes, as an itemized deduction on Line 5 of Schedule A.
Starting in Tax Year 2025
The overall limit on the deduction for state and local income, sales and property taxes has increased to $40,000 ($20,000 if MFS) and is reduced by your modified adjusted gross income if more then $500,000 ($250,000 if MFS) but will not reduce below $10,000 ($5,000 if MFS). Review the Schedule A line 5e to see the results.
To override the use of State and Local Income Tax vs Sales and Use Tax:
Lacerte automatically optimizes between the greater of sales tax or income tax. To override the optimization:
- Go to Screen 25, Itemized Deductions
- Scroll to the Taxes section.
- In the input box labeled 1 = force income tax, 2 = force sales tax, blank = optimize enter 1, 2, or leave blank.

- Go to Screen 25, Itemized Deductions.
- Scroll to the Sales and Use Taxes section.
- In the input box labeled 1 = force actual, 2 = force tables, blank = optimize enter either 1, 2, or leave blank.
