Using the SmartReturn tab to import data and more into a tax return in ProConnect Tax

What is the SmartReturn tab?
The Smart return tab allows you to upload multiple documents to a tax return and import all eligible documents in one click.Â
This allows for increased efficiency with data import, input, and review provides, thanks to our one-click batch document import, centralized checklists, and a side-by-side review of the original source document.

Document upload options
- Go to the SmartReturn tab.

- You will find the upload options and an option to request documents via Link to being the document collection process.
- Drag-and-drop browsing from your local device.

It's important to note that, in a secured pop-up, you will be asked to sign in to your Google or Dropbox account and grant the program access for the import task. - Request documents via client portal with Link. See here to learn more about Intuit Link.
- If a document checklist has been sent to the client and they have uploaded documents, those documents will reflect within the current year document list
- The program will process the uploads, categorize the documents, and determine which documents can be imported.
- You can upload up to 20 documents at a time using Dropbox or Google Drive.
- If a document is unreadable by the program it will be denoted within the uploaded document list.


Current year documents available for import
This list encompasses any documents uploaded directly within the tax return and documents upload by the client via Link.
- Once documents are identified as eligible for import select Import ready documents.Â
- Return Review will appear after all documents have been imported.Â
- Preview return will open allowing to review the imported documents on the tax return itself and leverage jump to input to access the input screens.
- Within the tax return input, imported field will be outlined with green and are available to adjust as need.Â
- To review the source document, against the input you can open the Document List to review the imported documents against the input screen for any updates
- The list will narrow to the input screen document type

Prior year documents
This allows you to review uploaded documents from the prior year return as a reference to help create the current year document checklist and confirm your current year’s list.

Summary of Last year's efiled return
Review high level information from the most recent e-file for the client to use as reference for the current year document checklist and input.

Common questions
How many documents can I import?
From the document list, you can import up to 10 documents at a time in a single workflow. This is only accessible from the document list, and is not available on the organizer panel.
For returns other than 1040, you can now upload and view documents from the drawer while in the return. We've also made CSV/Excel imports available from the import hub panel for business returns in addition to the existing option under the Import Data dropdown.
Right now, all of the previous entry points for importing data are still available.

How do I flag items for review?
Flagged items are specific input fields marked as needing review. You can track missing data or estimated amounts by flagging the appropriate input fields.
- Go to the Input Return tab.
- Go to the input field you need to flag.
- Place your mouse over (or put cursor inside of) the field. A flag button will appear to the right.
- Sometimes a more button will appear, which looks like three dots like so â‹® . Select more to see the Flag item option.
- Select the flag button or the Flag item option.
The flagged field will be highlighted in orange on your input screen, and the missing information added to a list of flagged items for the return.
How do I split or merge documents from the import drawer?
- Go to the data import tab on the right side of the screen.
- Select Browse to view your documents.
- Select up to 10 tax forms that you want to Split or Merge before importing.
Split:
- Select the three dots by any imported document to open the dropdown for more options.
- Here, you'll see an option to Split. Select that.
