Using overrides and adjustments in ProConnect Tax
by Intuit• Updated 2 years ago
This article will help you understand the purpose of override and adjustment fields and how to use them.
- Various input fields in ProConnect Tax are marked as [Override] or [Adjustment], sometimes abbreviated to [O] and [A], respectively.
- Entries in these fields will change the amounts calculated on tax forms and schedules.
About Overrides
- Any entry in an override field replaces the program's automatic calculation for that specific item.
- To override any amount to zero, enter -1.
- Some overrides may suppress the form they refer to.
- For example, any entry in Earned Income Credit (EIC) [Override] will print directly on Form 1040, line 17a.
- The entry will also suppress Schedule EIC. The program assumes you are going to prepare Schedule EIC separately and attach it to the return.
- Some override fields are considered user option overrides and typically control which forms print or which statements and worksheets are generated with the tax return.
About Adjustments
- Any entry in an adjustment field adjusts the program's automatic calculation of that specific item.
- Enter a positive amount to add to the automatic calculation, or enter a negative amount to reduce the automatic calculation.
Not every item on the tax return will have an adjustment or override field available. Additionally, the use of some override or adjustment fields may not be allowed for e-filing. If this is the case, a critical diagnostic will generate, alerting you that the return should be paper filed.
