How to resolve Diagnostic 6320 in Lacerte
by Intuit• Updated 4 weeks ago
If the following diagnostic is generating:
"Depreciation asset #{PrefixNum}: Total mileage entered is less than business mileage."
This diagnostic is critical and will prevent e-filing until resolved.
What Causes This Diagnostic to Generate?
Lacerte generates Diagnostic 6320 when the business mileage entered for a listed property (typically a vehicle) exceeds the total mileage driven for the year.
This inconsistency triggers a critical diagnostic because the business portion of usage cannot logically be greater than the total use of the asset. This commonly occurs during data entry on the Depreciation screen (Screen 22) under the Listed Property section.
To Resolve This Diagnostic:
Follow these steps to locate and correct the issue:
- Open the Diagnostics Tab
- Select directly on Diagnostic 6320 to jump to the related asset,
or navigate manually to Screen 22, Depreciation > Deductions
- Select directly on Diagnostic 6320 to jump to the related asset,
- Locate the Affected Asset
- Use the asset number referenced in the diagnostic message (e.g., asset #3).
- Scroll through the asset list on Screen 22 to find that specific item.
- Review the Mileage Fields
- Scroll down to the section labeled Automobiles and Other Listed Property.
- Locate the fields for:
- Business miles
- Total miles
- Correct the Entry
- Ensure that the Business mileage is less than or equal to the Total mileage.
- If needed, adjust one or both values to reflect accurate use based on client records.
- Recalculate the Return
- Press F9 to recalculate.
- The diagnostic should now be cleared.
Additional Tips
- This diagnostic is critical and will prevent e-filing until resolved.
- If total mileage is unknown, request documentation from the client before making assumptions.
- Lacerte uses these mileage inputs to determine allowable depreciation, vehicle expense limits, and listed property qualifications — so accuracy matters.
