DEBIT DATE OF PAYMENT BE THE SAME AS FILING DATE

aifin

Many times we are preparing a return, after the deadline has passed and we have to put the current date as a date to debit the amount due. However, sometimes the return is not e-filed on that day. And we get an e-file error asking us to change the date to the filing date. Very annoying when it is a batch of several dozen clients.

Solution: add a check box that says "Debit date equals the filing date?"

That way no matter when it is e-filed, we don't have to go back in to each individual return to change the date. Sometimes both federal and state.

you cant schedule a payment for later than the filing date, that should be the last thing you do prior to filing, when you get the 8879s returned to you, insert the EF PIN date and debit date on the day you file.

We do.

But many times we then send invoices out and get paid a few days later (we won't file without payment).  And for many of these we need to go back in and change date, AGAIN.

We batch efile dozens at a time, and its annoying to go in and change a silly date.  Should be a check box saying, in effect, as soon as possible.

Just a little curious.  Do you have the client sign the 8879 up front or when you get paid?

I thought I read somewhere, perhaps in regard to professional liability (Circular 230), that once we received the signed permission, 8879, we had to e-file regardless of receiving payment.

In other words, we couldn't e-file before the signed 8879 was received, but once we received it, we had to file.

The  no stockpile rule. I believe you have to efile within 3 days of receiving the signed efile forms.

"I believe you have to efile within 3 days of receiving the signed efile forms."

That was the basis of my question without leading the witness  😁

Not in Circular 230.  And imagine the scenario, client sitting at your desk, you print the return and give the 8879s to him, he signs and says "AHA!  File my return now and I'm not paying you a penny!"  And not because of disappearing pennies.

It does address having to return original copies of client paperwork regardless if a dispute over fees.

Many preparers lock the return and 8879 to the invoice, pay up before you can sign or file..

I know TaxDome has this option.
