IRS caught it and reduced refunds for several clients, now I'm waiting for one to end up owing because of it.

Did you happen to accidentally check the residency box at the top of the Social Security worksheet?
Every time we see a complaint about SS like this, its due to an entry error and somehow that box at the top has been checked by mistake.
Its good to get in the habit of using the 2 year comparison as a final step to completing the return to make sure nothing that showed on last years return is missing from this years return, it only takes a few minutes and if they had SS benefits in the year prior you would have noticed they were missing this year and could have investigated "why".
