Client qualified for $1900.00 Property tax credit, Michigan refunded $348.
Client received letter from State of Michigan saying they adjusted her refund, but did not explain why.
Alternate Worksheet 5 for renters Age 65 and older works out to a credit of $1900.00. Client lives in service fee housing, nowhere on the form or instructions is this a consideration. The $348.00 is the credit amount when worksheet 5 in not used.
Worksheet 5 is part of MI 1040 CR in ProSeries Basic and is viewable on the MI 1040 CR screen but does not appear in the print menu. It is not printed with print copy and is not saved as part of the pdf file.
Is this reduced Credit caused by Worksheet 5 not being submitted through e-file?
T/P has filed MI1040 CR for several years and has not had the Credit Adjusted.
In other tax groups Ive seen lots of complaints about Michigan letters that make no sense, you're not alone.
This is one of the FB groups Im in, I narrowed it to posts about Michigan and how inept they are this year
https://www.facebook.com/groups/941052522618444/search/?q=Michigan
Ohhh, you may need to be a member of the group to see it, sorry....my point is, lots of erroneous Michigan letters being sent out.
So, how do they rectify issues? Amend or try to resolve through letters?
Im not familiar with MI at all, and now that Im reading some of the posts in other groups about the MI letters, they all seem to involve estimated payments, so maybe your issue is different....Id start with reading the actual instructions for that credit, makes sure that your take on it is correct, then use ChatGPT to draft a letter, maybe include that worksheet you feel might be missing along with your resolution letter.
Thanks I appreciate your thoughts.
I have read and reread the forms and instructions in the MI 1040 booklet. I like your idea about AI. I did have a long dialogue with Leo ( Brave search engine AI assistant). I think I will draft the letter and include the worksheet. See where it goes from here.
