So I have a tax client that did not purchase insurance through the marketplace in California. The error code I get when I efile the tax return (both federal and CA) states that taxpayer purchased insurance through the marketplace and that we need to enter form 1095-A and resubmit. I confirmed with the tax client that there was no insurance purchased through the marketplace. I check the box on the healthcare entry form for the 1095-A that no insurance was purchased through the marketplace, but it is still rejecting both federal and CA returns. Am I missing another fix?
There is no 1095-A form that my tax client received. She even got a 1095 B showing that she was covered under her original plan. Most of the time that I get this message the taxpayer did have marketplace insurance. However, this tax client was on disability for a good portion of the year but her employer continued to cover her under her plan through work. The only thing I can think of is that somehow when the disability paperwork got filed that somehow her SS# got attached to a potential marketplace insurance. But she never received anything from covered CA, so maybe her SS# mistakenly got attached to someone else's marketplace insurance? Stranger things have happened in this state LOL.
Has she contacted covered CA, spoke to a person and verified that no 1095A was issued to anyone listed on her tax return?
Yes, we had her call Covered CA and they confirmed that they had no records of her every having insurance through the marketplace. We are going to suggest that she call IRS to see if she can clear this up directly through them. Otherwise we will have to have her mail in her return. I wonder if she would have the same issue no matter where she got her taxes done. Could this be a program flaw or something at the IRS that is holding up the return? I have tried the fixes that were suggested and still it isn't working.
My thought is identity theft. dunno
Open Form 1095-A. At the top of the form click Check if No Marketplace Insurance Purchased box to the right. Under the checked box click on Quick zoom to ACA explanation. Print and attach the ACA explanation when you e-file the return.
