Question

is anyone filing NJ-630 form [extension to file] having issues with the EFW box, which one to check or not check?

It's asking to check the electronic funds withdrawal 'Yes' box, then in review it's saying not to check the 'Yes' box.  So I've checked the 'No' box and I've left both boxes unchecked and it still doesn't like my choice here.  Is anyone else having this difficulty filing a NJ-630 extension form?

What type of form are you extending for? NJ 1040? Are you trying to make an ACH payment with the extension? NJ ext is only required if a tax is due or no federal extension… otherwise, it is a piggyback on the federal.   NJ penalties kick in if payment is not received by 4/15 regardless of whether return is extended

If at first you don’t succeed…..find a workaround

Interesting, I've always filed the NJ-630 along with the federal 4868 when asked to check the boxes, when electronically filing the extension forms, once readied.  I did not know that about piggybacking if no payment is required.

Skylane, thanks much.

In previous years I have been able to file a NJ-630 with a zero balance due. I prefer to file one anyway despite piggy back rules.

Is this issue new for 2025?

I am having the same problem with a zero extension.  Wants me to check the box for payment due when there is none.  Has to be a Proseries problem.

I also file a NJ extension even though a Federal extension is filed.  Makes the client feel better🤦‍♀️

Don't know if you saw my other post but there's another issue if you're doing any New York State partnerships the gross income worksheet is not populating correctly this may come into play when you do next year's (meaning 2026)  IT 204-LL as it use previous year income

For 2025 NJ Law states: You must file this NJ-630 application if:

1. You are applying for an extension of time to file a New Jersey Income Tax return but you are not applying for a federal extension; or

2. You are applying for both a federal and a New Jersey extension and are required to remit payment to the New Jersey Division of Taxation by the original due date of the return in order to have at least 80% of your actual tax liability (as calculated on your New Jersey Income Tax return when filed) paid.

I used to file state returns to make my clients feel better. However, I now file only when required. This reduces the amount of information the state has to deal with and reduces the work I have to do. I keep my records showing why I did or did not file a state extension. I tell my clients that all required extensions were filed and they are happy.

NJ does not want to deal with extensions when not required.

Yes I am as well. Do we know why or what the fix is?

What I've been doing is filing my 4868 federal extension form while in the federal tax portal then going over to NJ tax portal and filing the NJ-630 extension there.  I have to electronically file and receive confirmations twice, but EF section of ProSeries is telling me they've both been successfully filed.

yes - very frustrating! Even if no money is owed with the extension, I still get the error msg. You have to have their bank info in there and check "yes" to withdraw funds even though they are not. You will still get an error msg but the extension will go through when you submit it.

I guess that's one way to make it work!!  Another practitioner [Michael] replied that although the filing gets rejected [red thumb down] he said it does get filed.  Reading up on NJ-630 [2025] automatic extension to file [NJ], it says there's no need to file NJ-630 if you've filed the federal timely and have paid 80% of your final tax liability.  I don't think I've ever filed a NJ extension with a payment!  Every client I deal with in NJ just don't want to be penalized for late filing.
