Question

I am filing 990. The Non profit was set up in 8/2020 so I had to file a short return. Now for year Im trying to file but its saying its already been filed for the year.

I filed short year of 8.7.2020 to 8.31.2020. now I need to file 9.1.2020 to 8.31.2021 but its says its already filed because both use ProSeries 2020. The 990 has to be efiled. Any suggestions

How'd you get that initial short year one efiled?

The more I know the more I don’t know.

    I filed it using the 2020 software, but I guess I should have used the 2019 software

    The first short year should have been filed with 2019 software for any fiscal year ending in 2020.  So you might try deleting that return so Proseries has no record of it.  I don't think IRS is rejecting it, but merely Proseries.  Then refile fiscal year ending in 2021.

    So basically because even though the short year was all in 2020 I really should have filed using the 2019 software...
