You cannot have a negative amount in Box 2. Don't even know how the employer could have generated that other than typing it out.

Taking a look at all the payslips for the year should give you a clue what has gone wrong if your client can't tell. My wild guess is the employer issued a second W-2 to reflect money returned to your client for erroneous withholding when a W-2C should have been issued.
