How to check the box for border state to Virginia? Where is the link to that box? Will I still have to file the return for the border state (and buy its software)?

Yes, you'll have to file a border state return.  The whole point of the "border state" box is to alter the calculation of the Other State Credit (in the taxpayers favor).

If you qualify, the box is on the Information Worksheet in the VA return in Part IV at the very bottom of Page 1.

Edit: If you pay-per-return, yes, you'll have to pay for the KY/MD/NC/WV return.

If you have ProSeries Professional, I believe you just download the States you want, no additional cost. Don't know about the "Border State" box. Normally the bordering states have reciprocal agreements not to tax each others residents if they work in those states. Wages earned are reported but no state tax withholding is done.

I went to Part IV of the VA information worksheet, checked the box, but nothing happened. I'm ready to give up on it.
