Question

How much detail to enter for the original tax return prepared by someone else when preparing an amended 1040?

How much detail do I need to enter in an original 1040 filed by someone else when preparing an amended return?

I don't have all the detail documents and there are many errors that appear in the original return because all the detail isn't entered. Surely, we don't have to enter everything as though we are preparing the original return again.

The instructions aren't clear as they only say to create the original return. Do I ignore the errors because that original return doesn't get e-filed but only the correct 1040 and the 1040x are e-filed?

Thank you.

If you are going to e-file the amended return, you need to enter pretty much all of the detail so it walks and talks like the original return.  If you paper file the amended return, as long as you have correct totals on the various lines of the 1040 you can shortcut the system to get the return done.

I "think" if you prepare the correct return first, THEN activate the 1040X,  you can then just go to the 1040X and put the figures from the original return directly into the Original Column of the 1040X and it will Efile....you dont have to prepare the return exactly as the original was....that being said, in order to prepare the amended (correct) you will need the all the details for the correct return, you cant just fudge them in anywhere.

I tried this on a dummy return and it didnt give me any errors for Efiling.

If I didn't prepare the original return, I usually tell potential/new client the fee is my regular base fee not my lower amended fee as I pretty much do the return wrong first to enter as much as possible. Plugging and overriding if I don't have the actual original paperwork. Once I know I tie out / match the original return I save that file called original (or input to amend). Then do save as and do the amended return checking off the box original return was accepted. That always works for e filing for me.

Thanks, everyone for your input.

The only change is for a 2023 tax return to add a student dependent and his 1098-T to the mother's tax return and to amend the student's 2023 tax return since he didn't check the box that someone else can claim him.

So, it appears that I will need to re-enter all original tax documents, which I may not be able to get, in order to e-file the amended tax returns. I guess paper filing is the best option for this situation.

I also have a few amended returns where the taxpayer prepared the original return in TurboTax. Have any of you had success with downloading TT returns into PS? I'm hoping that by downloading the TT return, all of the needed detail input will be downloaded which will allow the amended return to be e-filed.

Thank you.

if youve got the TT data file, that would save you quite a bit of work.
