2020 tax refund applied to 2021

Completing 2020 tax return for client today.  Needs/wants refund applied to 2021 because there will be tax due.   Filing 2020 this late, will IRS apply to 2021 or will they just send check regardless of how return is marked ?

With processing delays and general chaos going on at the IRS, I wouldn't attempt that unless you want to deal with headaches down the road.  Ok, now what was that saying?  Oh yeah - just my opinion.

    You're right probably bad idea to attempt having it applied.   If we get this in soon there is a possibility client will receive refund in time to pay 2021 tax due.  I think the odds of that happening is better than IRS applying to 2021.
