Question

I need to file a 990PF for my foundation. Why is the system telling me I need an EFIN from the IRS? I'm not an accountant, just trying to do one return. I feel lost.

IRS letter requires E-filing this year. Their website directed me to a list of links, from which I chose ito.intuit.com and signed up and paid for a return. But this seems to be for a professional accounting business to use Intuit. I just want to do my 990PF using Intuit's system and efile through it. Doesn't seem like I should need an EFIN for it but I'm lost on what to do.

You need an EFIN to efile using professional tax software.

You don't need one for TurboTax, Intuit's consumer software. I don't know if it does 990PFs though.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Since this is professional software, Intuit does require an EFIN to use any of their professional products.

See the second FAQ https://proconnect.intuit.com/tax-online/faqs/

https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/become-an-authorized-e-file-provider This will allow you to file any type of return with any of the professional products.
