1099-Q for dependent who is not listed as dependent on the return
I have a 1040 where the father withdrew the final tranche of 529 money and received the 1099-Q. But if I indicate the child for which the funds were used for educational expenses, the program says that social security number doesn't match a dependent on the return so is disregarded. That might be okay but the IRS will receive the 1099-Q and believe that the father took the money and didn't report income since there is nothing related to education on the return. He can't claim the child as a dependent because his ex-spouse claims the children and is uncooperative. My software last year allowed me to enter the educational expenses and the 529 funds normally just indicating the child's information but without forcing the child to be listed as a dependent.
Is there a solution to this?
Thanks.
