How to schedule 2026 Federal estimated taxpayments for 1040 being extended?

It appears that in Lacerte federal estimate payments can only be set up for returns filed without extension.  That is a ridiculous limitation because the taxpayers most likely to want to set up the automatic estimated payments are the same people likely to need to extend their returns (waiting for  K-1's, etc.)

A Q1 estimate can be set up at irs.gov Direct Pay.

Most states have a web pay option, too.

EDIT: I usually include the Q1 estimate in the extension payment.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

Just bundle the Q1 extension payment into the extension payment (Q2 also if you'll think they'll be that delayed in filing). That gives you more margin in case surprise income shows up, and logs an earlier date for the estimates when you roll them forward rather than making them standalone.
