Question

Spouse transitioning to Taxpayer

In 2024 the husband was listed as the Spouse.  Now, because his wife is unemployed, he feels that he should be listed as the Taxpayer. Will this confuse the IRS?  They always want to know the primary.  I don't have POA so that doesn't matter.

This would be the first time I have seen a transitioning taxpayer.

"This would be the first time I have seen a transitioning taxpayer."

Someone else is doing Caitlyn Jenner's return.  Just out of curiosity, what does the wife think?  Or does her opinion not matter to anyone?

Next year when she finds a job that pays twice as much as he earns are they going to want to switch back?

It will confuse the IRS.

Let it be.

I interpret transitioning differently than what you mean, but I do understand what you mean.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

useful thoughts Sjr.

I was only referencing gender transitioning, to be provocative, and garner attention to my post.

I think I'll let it be.

The wife was always the primary, so I added him to her return when they got married, to avoid the TP-S designation changes.

I think he has an ego.

Gender transitioning isn't a light or trivial matter to me. So my initial post isn't intended to make light of this topic. My office administrator is transitioning, and it has been very difficult for her.  I have empathy.
