But forcing it is generally a bad, bad idea....let Lacerte do the math.

Make sure you do have each W-2 tagged to the appropriate taxpayer or spouse.  

Any excess withholding from a SINGLE employer (i.e. the W-2 is wrong) must be refunded by said employer.

Lacerte will automatically generate an amount on line 72 of the Sch 5 if any of the following apply:
  • A taxpayer received multiple W-2s and the combined amount of social security withheld exceeds the limit for the year.
  • An amount was entered in Box 12 with Code A- Uncollected SS/RRTA, or Code M- Uncollected SS/RRTA on group-term life insurance on tips, that exceeds the limit for the year.
To force an amount on Sch 5, Line 72:
  1. Go to Screen 38.2, EIC, Residential Energy, Other Credits
  2. Scroll down to the Other Credits section.
  3. Enter the amount in Excess social security & RRTA tax withheld [O].
