Question

Amending a tax return I did not prepare

Good day everyone,

I am trying to figure out how to amend a tax return for a client.  The wrinkle is it is a first year client and he's asked me to amend a return I did not originally prepare.

Can this be done in Lacerete?  If so, how do I amend?

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Yes you can.

First recreate the original return in Lacerte. You may be able to shortcut some things, such as if Schedule B won't change, just enter total int & divs and not all 6 sources.

Then prepare the amended return.

There may be a question as to whether it can be efiled, though.

The more I know the more I don’t know.

If the original return was e-filed (and no more than 2 e-filed amendments of that same return have already occurred), the amended return should theoretically be able to be e-filed. I've had no issues e-filing amended returns where the original was prepared by someone else using a non-Intuit software.

Hi SJRCPA and Phoebe

First of all, thank you for your responses and insight.  I really appreciate you!  Ok, I"m trying to not overthink this, but....

Phoebe, (love that name!)

The original return was efiled by H&R Block.  I don't think H&R Block uses Lacerte but if they did, I know that no amendment was filed to the original return.  To your point, I am planning on efiling the amended return. Thank you for pointing that out.

SJRCPA,

I understand about recreating the original return in Lacerte.  Dumb question:  If I recreate the original return, won't I have to efile it in order to amend it?  And should I file that recreated return if it has already been filed/efiled?  Or do I NOT efile the recreated return, Amend the recreated return only and just efile the amendment?  I thought you could only use the "E-File Amendement Wizard" after you've run the E-file Wizard on a return.

Hope that question makes sense.

Please let me know your thoughts and again thank you so much for your help.

No you do not efile the recreated return. (If you tried it would be rejected because it would be a duplicate return.) efile only the amended return.

The more I know the more I don’t know.
